Worth the Wait: A
Breeder's Dream

Orchard Hill
Charismatic (Brady) Winners dog, Best of Winners & Best of Breed ACKCSC
National Specialty 2011 UK breeder/judge Mr. Kenneth Town (Barsac Cavaliers
Flash back several
years, 2007 to be exact. Our tricolor bitch, Ch. Orchard Hill Never Grow Up,
was being shown by Ernesto Lara and was the Number Three Cavalier in the
country. "Wendy" had been Top Cavalier in the CKCSC-USA for 2006 and in 2007
had earned four Best in Specialty wins and several Toy Specialty Breed wins.
But she was almost four years old and was due in season.
Our plan had been to
breed Wendy to Eng. Ch. Pascavale Enchanted. I had been to the UK and seen him
and several of his get: I thought he and Wendy complimented each other very
well.
But Enchanted had not yet arrived in the States when Wendy came
in season. Instead we bred her to another top-producer, Ch. Hurleaze Birthday
Boy at Shirmont. The breeding produced four CKCSC-USA champions, one of which
eventually became an all-breed Best in Show winner.
By the time we were
ready to breed Wendy again Enchanted had gone home to the UK. Another choice
was made, also a good one, and time passed.
In 2010 Wendy finally produced her Enchanted litter. At
last we were able to see our imagined puppies in the flesh, and we were not
disappointed: a Blenheim male is now USA/AKC Ch. Orchard Hill Tough Enough,
J.W. Handled by Rachel, "Paddington" finished easily with a five-point
Specialty major, Breed wins over Specials and a Group Four. His tri litter
sister, Ch. Orchard Hill Next Stop, Wonderland, also has a five-point specialty
major and was Best of Opposite Puppy at the CKCSC-USA Puppy of the Year under
UK breeder Gil Baker. A second tri female is Orchard Hill Buy Me a Pony, J. W.,
who was Best in Futurity at the recent ACKCSC National under breeder- judge
Mrs. Judy Gates.
And finally there's Brady, who is shared with our friends Chris
and Shelly Hodgkinson and has spent his adolescence with them in Canada. No one
had seen Brady "in person" until his debut in San Jose in May of 2011. And
suddenly there he was, first time at a show, sparkling and wagging, seemingly
glad to have been invited to the party.
It was a Cinderella Story minus the large orange pumpkin:
Rachel, Chris and I watched with bated breath as Brady charmed British
breeder/judge Mr. Ken Town into giving him first Winners Dog and later, Best of
Winners and Best of Breed from the classes. Shelly's face in the photo says it
all for Rachel and me: winning the National from the classes with a homebred
dog is a breeder's dream and just about as good as it gets.
Thank-you, everyone, for your overwhelming support and good
sportsmanship. We appreciate every kind word.
